Summary

This delightfully disastrous queer YA rom-com is a perfect read for fans of Jenny Han, Morgan Matson, and Sandhya Menon。

When Nozomi Nagai pictured the ideal summer romance, a fake one wasn't what she had in mind。

That was before she met the perfect girl。 Willow is gorgeous, glamorous, and。。。heartbroken? And when she enlists Nozomi to pose as her new girlfriend to make her ex jealous, Nozomi is a willing volunteer。

Because Nozomi has a master plan of her own: one to show Willow she's better than a stand-in, and turn their fauxmance into something real。 But as the lies pile up, it's not long before Nozomi's schemes take a turn toward disaster。。。and maybe a chance at love she didn't plan for。

I loved the way this book explored rom-com tropes in a realistic setting。 This book is very self-aware, it’s unique in the way it feels like real life rather than fantasy。 I also adored how this book explored love in many different areas, not just teen love。 The story’s main characters were all POC and a majority of them were queer, which is rare to see in YA, so that was very much appreciated! Overall, this book is very deep and hits on real life circumstances in a very beautiful way while fitting in with the YA genre。 This is a great read for queer teens!I do agree with some other reviews that many of the characters, even the main character seem very tepid。 At some points the characters were overly self-aware, it felt psycho-analytical almost。 The characters were telling the reader how to feel, they were proving themselves to the reader very head-on rather than letting their actions prove their intentions。 I feel like this is common in YA, though, so I can excuse it a little bit, but it did feel a bit awkward and it didnt read very smoothly at some points。I will say, however, this book is riveting and it really does make you want to know what happens next。 It has a very unique story! 。。。more

3。5 stars - I liked the mc and her family, but I didn't like the real love interest lmao。。。 I'm just not into cynical characters + their first meeting left me with a bad impression even though they worked through thatI liked the writing style here for a YA, and I appreciated the twist on fake dating although for once I actually would have liked the mc to stay with the fake love interest!!! she seemed more genuine than the other girl lol I didn't really feel any chemistry between the two actual l 3。5 stars - I liked the mc and her family, but I didn't like the real love interest lmao。。。 I'm just not into cynical characters + their first meeting left me with a bad impression even though they worked through thatI liked the writing style here for a YA, and I appreciated the twist on fake dating although for once I actually would have liked the mc to stay with the fake love interest!!! she seemed more genuine than the other girl lol I didn't really feel any chemistry between the two actual leads。 。。。more

dnf 17%Childish mc (just found out she’s 18??) and I’m thoroughly confused on who the love interest is。 Though I don’t like either options (lesbians) that are given。 I’m in a reading slump, too, so I can’t just read through the rough parts

It was my second Misa Sugiura book and it was so very cute! I knew from the start what was going to happen, it was soon pretty obivous, but I was really intrigued to know how the author will lead to this conclusion。 And it was perfectly executed。 I loved how Nozomi felt like a real teenager, she does not truly know who she is and thinks that she has to change aspects of herself for people to really see her and appreciate her (just like every teenager, and even every person ever)。 Nozomi has stro It was my second Misa Sugiura book and it was so very cute! This is the first Misa book I've ever read and not only did it get me out of my reading slump but it also started my love for her。 Is this another fake dating book? yes, but it's pretty different compared to the rest。 I love the culture and heritage she uses throughout the book because it adds a different level of emotion for each character and hooks you in faster。 I'm also just a sucker for a good love triangle and a different but still cliche ending。 This is the first Misa book I've ever read and not only did it get me out of my reading slump but it also started my love for her。 Is this another fake dating book? yes, but it's pretty different compared to the rest。 I love the culture and heritage she uses throughout the book because it adds a different level of emotion for each character and hooks you in faster。 I'm also just a sucker for a good love triangle and a different but still cliche ending。 。。。more

DNF at 103 pages。This book oscillates between being too twee and too emotionally mature for a teenager。 Overall, this kind of typifies why I am too old to read true YA books。I probably would have loved this book if I would have read it as a teenager。 This DNF is a me issue。 Great rep for Asian American lesbians。

“my train wreck dumpster fire disaster of a plan”I enjoyed this to a certain extent。 It’s a cute chaotic love …quadrangle? I got through it fairly quickly。 What bothered me most was that the protagonist Nozomi was so unlikable。 Her decision-making which dictates the whole plot was quite aggravating to me。 Not to mention that she is insensitive and outright rude at times。 But it’s okay, she’s quirky and she apologized soo… all good?Don’t get me wrong, it was entertaining but I don’t know if t “my train wreck dumpster fire disaster of a plan”I enjoyed this to a certain extent。 It’s a cute chaotic love …quadrangle? Of course it was gonna be messy。I liked the exploration of the family dynamic, and the feelings surrounding all of that。 I agree with Lex’ review that this is the heart of the story。However, because we approach the story through Nozomi’s POV I feel I didn’t get as much out of it as I wanted。 She hardly ever considers other peoples’ feelings or if she does, she doesn’t go beyond the surface。 Neither does she really reflect on her own actions or feelings and just jumps from whim to whim, is quick to anger and occupies herself with her fantasies and infatuations and never really asks herself why。 I was hoping for a more thorough resolve and maybe for Nozomi to not end up with anyone。 But it was still fun to listen to at work。 “Delightful disaster” describes it pretty well I think。I like Sugiura’s writing style, it’s light-hearted and easy and fun and serious when it needs to be。 Though I think I preferred It's Not Like It's a Secret but it’s been like 2 years since i read that so who knows。 I think I could relate to the protagonist more in that one whereas this one not so much。 But that’s okay you don’t need to relate to everything。 That’s probably part of the fun, watching this disaster unfurl from a distance。it was cute it was fine I don’t know why I’m writing this much I really don’t know what my opinion is anymore bye 。。。more

I thought this would be a good book with great rep, but it ended up being a cliché rom com that wasn't even funny。 Nozomi is so so annoying and such a terrible main character。 She's naïve, ridiculous, and on top of that, her stupidity and selfishness hurt other people。 She gets mad at people and holds grudges but then expects everyone else to forgive her after she just says sorry? The ending was disappointing, frustrating, and stereotypical。 I thought this would be a good book with great rep, but it ended up being a cliché rom com that wasn't even funny。 Nozomi is so so annoying and such a terrible main character。 She's naïve, ridiculous, and on top of that, her stupidity and selfishness hurt other people。 She gets mad at people and holds grudges but then expects everyone else to forgive her after she just says sorry? Nozomi was so annoying, naive, and childish that I’m surprised I managed to make it through this book (granted I listened to the audiobook, so it made it easier)。 She’s supposed to be 17, which is why this is YA, but she read so much younger that it seemed better suited for a middle-grade rating。 I honestly didn’t want her to “get the girl”。 She does end up getting the girl, unfortunately, but fortunately, there was some resistance from the other girl beforehand。 This book wasn’t all bad; it had Nozomi was so annoying, naive, and childish that I’m surprised I managed to make it through this book (granted I listened to the audiobook, so it made it easier)。 She’s supposed to be 17, which is why this is YA, but she read so much younger that it seemed better suited for a middle-grade rating。 I honestly didn’t want her to “get the girl”。 She does end up getting the girl, unfortunately, but fortunately, there was some resistance from the other girl beforehand。 This book wasn’t all bad; it had its good moments。 Such as the realistic (and funny) sibling relationship。 I also enjoyed learning more about her family。 And the romance had its cute moments。 But these weren’t enough to redeem this book。 。。。more

This book was really cute and I liked the layers of the family drama alongside the relationship drama。 I got such bad second-hand embarrassment at points, but it was part of the fun of the book。

I usually love the fake dating trope but this main character is so annoying。 (view spoiler)[ first she wants the pretty girl, just cause she's pretty and when she finally gets her she realizes she likes the artist better, but the author didn't have them interact in a way that shows that slow change of feelings, they have a deep conversation and that's it。 (hide spoiler)] it only got two starts cause I listened to the audiobook while bored at work。 I usually love the fake dating trope but this main character is so annoying。 (view spoiler)[ first she wants the pretty girl, just cause she's pretty and when she finally gets her she realizes she likes the artist better, but the author didn't have them interact in a way that shows that slow change of feelings, they have a deep conversation and that's it。 (hide spoiler)] it only got two starts cause I listened to the audiobook while bored at work。 。。。more

4。5 stars! If you're looking for a good sapphic rom-com, then look no further! Our main character, Nozomi, decides that the best way to get a girl to fall for her and change up her wallflower image is to agree to her fake-dating scheme。 After all, it works in the movies, right? But it's also a really fun one。 In between these dating shenanigans, Sugiura weaves in tough topics like dealing with the fallout of a messy divorce and navigating a relationship with an older, homophobic relative。 I didn't always agree with Nozomi's actions and you have to be patient in understanding that she has a lot of growing up to do。 But if you believe that love conquers all, then she'll steal your heart as quickly as she did mine。 。。。more

This is the second Misa Sugiura book I've read - the first being It's Not Like it's a Secret。 Both books have some similarities to them。 But I found when I read INLIAS that I really didn't like the romance aspect of the story, but the family stuff was so compelling that I ended up enjoying the book a lot。 I also found with that character that I understood her thought processes with decisions she made, and she had a lot of feelings around shame and expectations that I understood well。I feel like This is the second Misa Sugiura book I've read - the first being It's Not Like it's a Secret。 Both books have some similarities to them。 But I found when I read INLIAS that I really didn't like the romance aspect of the story, but the family stuff was so compelling that I ended up enjoying the book a lot。 I also found with that character that I understood her thought processes with decisions she made, and she had a lot of feelings around shame and expectations that I understood well。I feel like Nozomi in this book has absolutely no concept of shame。 Every decision she made had me screaming WHY DID YOU DO THAT。 And I was so frustrated with her constantly。 But with YA I usually give the character the benefit of the doubt and say "ok, well, they're a teenager。 Teenagers do stupid shit。" and that helps me calm down (there's a bit in the story near the end where Nozomi asks her dad, "Am I a terrible person?" and he responds, "You're a teenager。" which had me going YES!)The problem is is that this book was more romance-heavy than INLIAS, and I didn't find the family stuff nearly as compelling, so there's not a lot I can say I enjoyed about this? The ending had me going, "Yeah, I don't think these characters are going to be together for longer than 6 months, tops。" 。。。more

For me, nothing can top ‘It’s Not Like It’s A Secret’, because that’s one of my all-time favorite books, but I can always appreciate Sugiura’s distinct style, characterizations, and great sense of plot control。 I love how she can make characters unlikeable, likable, and relatable at the same time! Like real people。
